Chandigarh : The sociology Department of GGDSD college Chandigarh organized a talk on “ World Suicide Prevention Day”on September 10, 2022. Dr. Ajay Sharma, Principal of GGDSD college, Dr. Madhu Sharma, Registrar and Dr. Mona Arora Head of the Department, Sociology welcomed the Speaker Dr. Sushmita Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor, department of psychiatry ,GMCH-32 Chandigarh.
Dr. Ajay Sharma, Principal, shared his personal experiences to awaken the students about sensitivity of the topic. He put emphasis on the thin line difference between suicide as an issue and it being used loosely to threat others in society. Dr. Sushmita talked about the present scenario of suicide in our society,the barriers and myths which stop people from seeking help. Light was thrown on the importance of stress management by practicing relaxation and mindful exercises. Dr. Mona Arora said " in contemporary society, everybody wants to achieve goals in a short span of time which causes stress and strain . It becomes difficult to cope up and individuals commit suicide-ac act of self destruction “.
A skit was performed by the Saksham group of the college to spread the message of how important human lives are. The event was wrapped with a pledge to help others to the best of our ability and guide them not to take extreme steps.
